Of course the OOPic has to execute code to interpret the ASCII and the
serial port needs to be serviced often to prevent overrun. All this
while still dealing with whatever other code is required.
I think there are tradeoffs in either approach. Intuitively, I like
the ASCII commands because they are simple and easy to decipher. But
I like the SCP approach because it all happens in the background and I
don't have to provide code. But, then again, it looks a lot like
magic and maybe that is a difficult thing to debug. Always tradeoffs...
One thing I have never seen discussed: can the OOPic keep up with SCP
at 9600 baud on a long term basis? Things like a PC continually
checking the status of a flag? Clearly the interpreter is dealing
with SCP but how fast can it go and still process the object loop?
Some day I'll have to do a little testing.
