Checking out the website shows the h-bridge chip is a 754410. This is
a standard chip, and works well with the oDCMotor2 object. It should
also work fine with a 9.6v battery and 7.2v motor. You should easily
be able to get a decent gradated motor speed.
From your description below, it sounds like you have it connected
wrong to your oopic board, or possibly the motor rating is > 1-amp.
