Both approaches work. The real question is: which is going to cause
more problems over the life of the product? Sockets are notorious
problems and I prefer to solder all the chips in my designs. I would
opt for the jumper myself.
But Savage probably has more information on the failure rates due to
the socket for the EEPROM.
