I started to go that direction and then stopped for two reasons:
1. software licensing;
2. BASIC, as a language, is pretty ugly.
WRT to item 1 above, I have a network of machines at which the
students work. Rarely are more than two or three workstations being
used to develop code but I would have needed a license for each
workstation, which is prohibitive. Even the MarkIII which comes with a
single-machine license for a BASIC compiler caused problems for kids
wanting to develop code on their computers at home and on the machines
at school.
And as for BASIC itself, the kids found it confusing and I found them
headed down the road to writing *really* ugly code. Limiting the scope
of code and variables helps a lot.
