This Forum is Dedicated For all The Object Oriented PIC Lovers .......... The concept behind OOPic is straight forward. Use preprogrammed multitasking Objects from a library of highly optimized Objects to do all the work of interacting with the hardware. Then write small scripts in Basic, C, or Java syntax styles to control the Objects. During operation, the Objects run continuously and simultaneously in the background while the scripts run in the foreground telling the objects what to do.

Products that you sold only how long ago? Products you're still unloading?

Newsflash bucko: The compilers have been there for a long time
already. You guys are a joke.

So much for "compile a list of compiler complaints and post it here",
eh? Must be nice to be able to do 180's like that without any
concern for your paying customers. And I like your characterization
of REAL BUG reports as user complaints.

No thanks. It will end up buggy and unsupported like all the
rest. Savage Innovations has a long history of doing this.

>Probably the coolest thing about the new compiler is

Just STFU already. Were the profits on the old products so bad that
they couldn't be supported? If so, the new ones won't do any better.

I'm not buying your bullshit. Who knows what lines you'll be feeding
us tomorrow, next week, next month. "Events bug? We have a compiler
fix scheduled for <random date>". That date has long come and gone
and no fix. I can see why Dennis is no longer with you; I'm sure he
had plenty of things to say about your "fuck the customer" attitude.

[oopic] Re: Savage Innovations / Compiler / ooBug and etc.. UPDATE

After a long conversation with Scott today, we decided on a few
things of importance to all of the user community.

1 - We are sad to say that Dennis Clark has moved on during this
transition phase for Savage Innovations. He will be missed, he wrote
the book afterall. I know that there are countless users that have
robots running around because of Dennis, myself included.

2 - All previous version of ooPic ie. S,R and C will be considered
legacy products at this time and will no longer be manufactured. In
addition we will be no longer supporting these items.

3 - All versions of the compiler will also go on the unsupported
legacy list.

We are doing this in order to concentrate on the new Pic 24 / 32
versions of our products that come with an all new compiler. As I
mentioned in my previous post, the ooBug is Pic 24 based and is using
the BioLab compiler right now. This is the basis for our new ooPics
and compiler.

Probably the coolest thing about the new compiler is the fact that if
you don't like how something works, you get to change it. Create new
objects, change old objects and import other users objects.
THe way it works in the BioLab version is that there is one main
class file full of all sorts of object details such as where they
work, how they work and what they work with. For a new user you
simply call the object, alter the properties and go. For the more
experienced, jump in and create an object that does what you want,
within the confines of the chip of course, and start using it.
Everything is now compiler side and not resident in the IC. No more
firmware updates and no more compiler downloads.

Yes, it will be USB and it does work on vista and XP machines, I am
writing code in another window on this vista machine as I type here.

Thank you for a lot of years of loyal flag wavin' support and we hope
you stay on long enough to see what we can do with some real
horsepower.

We have a limited supply of ooPic S, R and C boards in stock, get em'
while you can.

Re: [oopic] Compiler Issues

Not to beat the dead horse or anything but:

1. Events don't work in V6.

Given that events are one of the main things that separate the OOPic
from any other microcontroller, this is a *BIG* deal.

[oopic] Compiler Issues

Here are the problems of the compiler that I've thought of so far:

1. *Compiler gets confused and can't operate correctly when another
language besides English is installed on the computer. I've had this issue
many times. Since my mom needs Chinese installed on my computer, the OOPic
compiler "misinterprets" objects as other non-supported things. This
problem is also in the OOPic 5 version compiler; where when communicating
with the OOPic, it always has an error message "Expected: x Received: x"
(where X can be anything).

2. A Vista version would be nice too.

[oopic] Savage Innovations / Compiler / ooBug and etc..

Hello guys. Some of you know me some don't so we will fix that up real
quick.

I am Ted, Scotts new partner at Savage Innovations and the ooBug guy.
Call me Ted or ... try not to use too many bad words.

Compiler - Yes, we know we have got some work to do here. Please
understand, we have been on a two year journey to get the ooBug out the
door as a test bed for a new ooPic and new compiler. Now that we can see
a little daylight we will try and address the larger problems.

New ooPic? Did I hear that right? Yea... later this year we hope to put
out a new ooPic based on the Microchip Pic 24 family IC. We are trying
anyhow. Same basic board that runs the ooBug less the sensors and motor
driver. Pic 24 with a Pic 18 USB controller and of course the Soundgin
built in.

For those that have not heard, we now make a robot. It is the ooBug
based on the Pic 24 and Pic 18 USB controller. Soundgin, Object Detect,
Line Following, Light and Dark Sensing and more. Very expandable and
easy to program with the BioLab software. If you are the dev type, plug
in your ICD2 and code away. All in a 3.25 dia (approx) package. Check it
out at oobug.com.

If anyone would like to save us a bunch of time, compile a list of
compiler complaints and post it here as a new topic. We will take that
and do what we can. Maybe put a few asterisks by the worst offenders? It
is appreciated.

Ted

Is Dennis Clark still involved as the OOPic technical source for
Savage Innovations? He is the only one who can moderate this group.

As I mentioned earlier, I have no way to try the oRCIN1. Maybe it is
vaporware. IIRC, there have been objects defined in previous
iterations that didn't really work. Maybe this is one of them.

But I don't know that and I have no way to find out.

If you had an oServo connected to an oRCIN1 and the oRCIN1 didn't
return a value similar to that of the oServo and you know for certain
that the oServo is generating pulses then it's probably a good bet
that the oRCIN1 object doesn't work.

[oopic] Re: OOPIC C1+ Firmware

Well...I just had an opportunity to try out the below suggestion and
here's what I did:

- Hooked a single wire from Line 8 to Line 17.
- Dim-ed oRCIN1, set up it's Adjust property, and turned it on
- Created an oServo on Line 8 and commanded it to go to the neutral
position (32)
- Created another oServo on Line 9 and had the following line in the
code:

Servo2.Position = Vex.Ch1

- Servo2 was setup on Line 9 and and Vex is the name of oRCIN1

Here's the interesting thing: when I hooked up an actual servo on Line
9, I didn't get a response AT ALL from the servo. I unplugged the
Line 8 - Line 17 connection and reset the ooPIC, plugging in the
actual servo to Line 8 this time and saw it go to the neutral
position. To me, this meant that oServo on Line 8 was working (though
not a big surprise) but that Ch1 wasn't even being defined by oRCIN1,
as Servo2.Position didn't even register when a Servo was plugged into
Line 9.

The next part was probably the most interesting: when I changed oRCIN1
to oRCIN6 (and that's all I changed, though I put the setup back to
it's original state, making the Line 8 - Line 17 physical connection),
I got a response out of the servo hooked up on Line 9. Unfortunately,
the servo thought Ch1 was 0, as it moved to that position. I have
previously verified that the value here is, in fact, 0 by using the
Object Watcher program. In the past, moving the transmitter's CH1,
and thereby ideally changing this value from 0 to something else, does
nothing.

oRCIN1 to oRCIN6 made a difference with SOMETHING, though I'm still
not really sure what. Thoughts...comments?

Jonathan

Yup! That's how I would start...

BTW, I assume you saw 6 pulses of various widths between 1.0 and 2.0
mS in a 20 mS frame. I'm not sure what the pulse separation should be
but I know I have seen it on one of the servo manufacturer's sites.

I would imagine the pulses should be positive going. I have never
used an RC controller so I'm not sure what to expect. But I do know
what the pulses look like when they get to the servo and that the 1.0
- 2.0 mS thing. Some servos will accept a wider range - perhaps 0.5 to
2.5 mS.

Richard --

Good suggestion about scoping it, and I guess I should have mentioned
it before, but I have scoped it and seen the six distinct signals that
look properly set up for the the RCIN object says it needs.

Just so I understand correctly what you're saying, are you saying to
have a oServo object producing a PWM out of Pin 8, for example, and
feed Pin 8 straight into Pin 17 and Run the oRCIN1 object? Makes
sense and a good idea for troubleshooting. That would at least tell
us if the oRCIN object is "working". I'll report back in a few hours...

This is one of those situations where only a scope can help. You need
to SEE what the input looks like. You also need to see if the signal
is INVERTED or some other screwy thing. Debugging this stuff without
a scope is hopeless.

I often try some of these small snippets but, in this case, the object
is specific to C.1 and I don't have a device.

Like I suggested, run an oServo output into the oRCIN1 input and see
if it works. There is every likelihood that pulse polarity will not
be a problem.

You could also implement the example code and watch the output on some
LEDs or even convert the value to a string and transmit it out the
serial port.

But try it first with a single pulse using oRCIN1.

[oopic] Re: OOPIC C1+ Firmware

I will get a scope out and take a look at mine and see if I can get
the oRCIn object to do something. I might be a few days though.

[oopic] Re: OOPIC C1+ Firmware

BTW...below is the basic code that I've been trying to get to work for
the past few days:

-------------------------------------------------
Dim Vex As New oRCIN6
Dim Ch1_Link As oBus
Dim Servo1 As New oServo

Sub Main()
ooPIC.Delay = 5000

Vex.Operate = 1
Servo1.IOLine = 8
Servo1.Operate = 1

'Servo/Channel 1
Ch1_Link.Input.Link(Vex.Ch1.Value)
Ch1_Link.Output.Link(Servo1.Position.Value)
Ch1_Link.Operate = 1

End Sub
-------------------------------------------------

I've even used the Object Watcher found in the Files section (great
and useful tool!) to look at the values of Vex.Ch1.Value, and it
always is 0. Because it is, the Servo will move to an extremity
because it is expecting 0 to 63. Moving the stick for Ch. 1 on the
transmitter, though, does nothing to change that value, leading me to
believe that the incoming multiplexed servo line from the Vex is not
being properly parsed.

FYI...

[oopic] Re: OOPIC C1+ Firmware

No, I am using a Futaba Transmitter/Receiver. The output is a servo
timed pulse though so it should work. I need to hook both channels
up to a scope to see if there is seperation between them but either
way, a single channel should have worked with oRCIn (It works with
oPulseTimeH). I only needed two channels so I used three transistors
to build a quick and dirty multiplexer (1 Select, 1 Output, 2 Inputs)
and the PIC picks which one it wants to read, resets the pulsetimer,
waits for a new pulse, and continues.

Well, in a way that's a relief to hear that someone else has given a
shot at it and had troubles as well. That's exactly why I was hoping
to get it to work: virtual circuits to pass through servo commands
until I wanted to do something different with them. Are you using a
Vex transmitter/receiver? If so, might oRCIN not be perfectly mated
signal-wise with the Vex as previously mentioned in this forum? I'm
shooting from the hip here in hopes that these discussions will lead
to the solutions with oRCIN...

I tried to use this object a few weeks ago and could not make it
work. I ended up using a multiplexer, having the OOPic select the
channel with a select line and read the pulse width. After it
receives it, it selects the next channel and uses the pulse timer
object. I could not get it to work with only one channel (using the
servo output from the receiver) or multiple channels. The
multiplexer circuit / program reads the channels about 20 times per
second. I would love the RCIn object to work so I could do
everything with virtual circuits...Oh well.

I must have gotten cross-eyed. RC1 is correct. Still a capture input.

Try it with a single channel pulse. In fact, loop an oServo output
back to the oRCIN1 input and see what happens.

Post your code. It should be pretty short.

And describe how you have the system grounds tied together...

Counting the lines, isnt'e RC1 Line 17? In any event, I also tried
placing the signal onto Line 16 and it still doesn't seem to be
working. I'm trying to follow as best as I can the Object description
of oRCIN(1-6), but again, no dice...

You need to look at the schematic to find out which PIC pin has IOLine
17 (RC2). Then you need to look at the PIC16F877 datasheet to find
out what kinds of signals can be on this pin. Capture 1 input.

You need to inject the receiver signal BEFORE it is demultiplexed
where all 6 channels are spaced one after the other on a single wire.

[oopic] Re: OOPIC C1+ Firmware

I recently ordered a ooPIC-R and have been messing around with it for
the past week...great product! I have ordered a Vex Radio and
Transmitter and begun trying to get the oRCIN object to work with the
ooPIC. I have tried everything I can think of (I also followed the
PDF that is floating around to power the receiver and get the PPM
train off of the receiver onto Line 17), but I can't for the life of
me create a simple passthrough (either with a Do, Loop or a Link) to
control a servo hooked up to Line 8. Anything simple that I might be
missing or trick to directly passthrough the servo values coming in
from the transmitter and then out to the servo?

Thanks in advance for the help...

[oopic] Re: Can't get ooPIC611setup.exe

The OOPic Website has removed the link to the software download, but
you can still get to it by typing in the URL:

http://www.oopic.com/dloadp.html

I did not see the 611 setup.exe there and I don't have the beta site
URL handy.

RE: [oopic] Re: Can't get ooPIC611setup.exe

Yeah there is something going on. I haven't been on the oopic website for
over a year. So I don't know what the current version is or if this link
used to work or is new.

Sounds to me like this oopic611setup.exe is new.so new that no one has it
yet.

Try using a computer with a real serial port. There have been issues
with some USB-to-Serial cables, try using a different manufacturer of
cables.
I keep an older desktop around just to ensure I have a real serial
and parallel port available. I also use a Belkin USB/Serial cable
without problems, with my laptops. Sorry, don't have the exact model
# of the cable handy.

[oopic] New ooPic-R and Trouble Uploading File

I have recently received my new ooPic-R board and am having trouble
out of the gates with trying to program it. Let me run down some
facts about my current setup so that that diagnosing will take less time:

- The factory-loaded program is on there and properly runs on boot-up
- I am using a USB to Serial convertor cable
- I am pointing my software directly to the Serial Port (which is
even found by the IDE software)
- The error I get is the one referring to the "node" not being able
to be found. Upon pressing F5, there is a screen showing a progress
bar (that always stays on zero) and two to three seconds later,
another window pops up informing of the node problem and telling me to
try the EEPROM removal procedure (which I did).

Any suggestions at this point would be very helpful, as I'd like to
get something on there to see what this bad boy can do!

Thanks in advance,

Jonathan
