with some USB-to-Serial cables, try using a different manufacturer of
cables.
I keep an older desktop around just to ensure I have a real serial
and parallel port available. I also use a Belkin USB/Serial cable
without problems, with my laptops. Sorry, don't have the exact model
# of the cable handy.
