Use preprogrammed multitasking Objects from a library of highly optimized Objects to do all the work of interacting with the hardware. Then write small scripts in Basic, C, or Java syntax styles to control the Objects. During operation, the Objects run continuously and simultaneously in the background while the scripts run in the foreground telling the objects what to do.

You really need to post a link to the datasheet for your sensor so we
can see what you are trying to do. On the OOPic, you don't deal with
the concepts of start and stop. When you write to I2C, the OOPic
handles all of that.

So, just send the values you need. That checksum is going to be a
bother.

You can send 255 instead of 0xff
