Actually you wouldn't. You use an imager and place the scanning plane
at a oblique angle to the image plane. The distance is determined by
where the scanning plane intersects the image plane. The distance to
the object is determined by how high the scan line appears to be in
the image. It is done with triangulation.

It is difficult to describe with words and 2D drawings.
