Well, that would be 6V (alkaline or Li) but it would only be 4.8V if
you are using NiMH or NiCd. I guess I am having a problem
understanding. You said you had 6 batteries that were producing 24V.
The only way that could happen is the the batteries were 4V each. I am
not familiar with any 4V cells that are commonly available. (I know of
some 4V lead-acid batteries but those are uncommon.) So if you are
using 1.5V cells then your 6 cells would be 9V. That is still well
above the rating of your servo motors so, yes, dropping the voltage
either by using fewer cells or switching to NiMH would be the way to go.

FWIW, I regularly use 6x AA NiMH and the servos don't seem to mind.

There is nothing that the OOPic could do that would damage your
servos. The output of the OOPic is a PWM pulse-train at 5V. It just
can't hurt your servos. No, I think you just fried the buggers by
providing too high a source voltage. Sorry.
