With an RF camera and a tuner for your PC, you can be in the vision
business for $100. The software you want is already written and free:
www.roborealm.com.
Since the software can find the intersection of a
vertical plane (wall) and a horizontal plane (floor) it can also
determine if there is an object sitting on the floor closer than the
wall (box on floor).
