problem is I need parallel and serial so my modern PC could do serial
via serial/USB adapter but then I am SOL for parallel...

As Richard says, there is probably no need to rush into the version
C.1 chip. For one thing, there has been no formal announcement of its
release. Also, no one has said whether it has been totally debugged.
Also, you can do most things you will want to do with the B.2.2+
chip. As Dennis said, you can use the oPWMX object [works on any I/O
pin] if you need graded light intensities in your Led.
Also, as Richard says, and also your documentation says, you can do
all of your programming on the B.2.2+ chip using the serial port, and
don't need parallel. On a notebook PC, a USB-to-RS232 dongle work
fine. The OOPic IDE cannot find the dongle automatically, but you can
manually set the serial port [must be COM1-COM4 range], and go ahead.
